I was in my second semester at San Jose State when this tragedy occurred. I was a music major and sang in the concert choir. We gave a memorial concert to raise money for a scholarship in memory of Christina Cadena Estabrook who was a graduate of San Jose State. The memory of these high school choir members being killed and injured was always in my mind when our choir went on tour.

I grew up in Contra Costa County, and this occurred in my lifetime, but this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this. You would think rumors and urban legends would have been prolific on ever school kid’s mind in the late 70s early 80s.

The worst bus crash in history was the October 5, 2011, crash in Bathani Tola, Bihar, India, in which 31 people died.

08/08/2008 a church bus holding 57 souls blew left tire turned over falling off the bridge off of highway 75 in Sherman Tx, 22 of the 57 passed on Impact. I was the paramedic at the time.

Wouldn't the low-air-pressure wigwag indicator have dropped down directly in front of the driver, alerting him to the low air pressure? Or did he not understand that either? If air pressure were lost, there was still the Johnson Bar to activate a driveline brake (not that it would have helped much at 50 MPH). This is one reason that belt-driven engine accessories are less common now than direct-driven accessories. My 1990 Crown has only one belt (for the alternator); the air compressor and PS/hydraulic pump are both direct-driven off the back of the engine, so I'm guaranteed to always have air pressure and steering assistance.

WRONG!!!! AIRBRAKES RELY ON AIR PRESSURE TO KEEP THEM OPEN NOT CLOSED. Meaning if the air pressure was low and failed then the brakes would IMMEDIATELY LOCK UP. If there were no skid marks, then the air pressure to the brakes was NOT the issue. TRY AGAIN.

Visions are the best handling, most tank like imo. I drove a 2022 7.3 v8 birdy for four years. I now drive motor coach, 45ft big ole things. But I'll always miss my beast bird. And I'll say this in the most honest way possible.... The Godzilla blows the triton away 3x over. Swear on my life.

I drive city buses for a living. We have both Diesel and gas buses. Our gas buses are 2018 ElDorado on F550 chassis. And they have the triton V10. They’re not the best quality buses but they are very quick.

I lived across the bay from the Martinez, the crash site. The exit was immediately after coming off the bridge that joined our two cities and the Bay Area. On this day, I was in 6th grade at the old middle school. We could hear the sirens but was not sure what occurred. Walking home that day we learned about the school bus over turning and students dying. It is a core memory for me. The sadness. That turn was coming right after you got off the bridge. The amount of traffic back then was light. I took that off ramp many times and always thought of the accident while on the ramp. I still do occasionally reflect on similar style ramps. 3 1/2 months after the accident our new middle school opened and I had to take a bus to school. Getting on the bus or seeing a bus sometimes the accident flashes in my memory. This was first time I heard about young people dying. Even before I heard about kids being kidnapped in the news. One thing that strikes me as odd all these years later, back then people complained about the lack of seatbelts on school buses after this accident. We didn’t want them as they were not cool. Even adults lamented seatbelts could be more dangerous than not wanting them. In 1986 the seatbelt law went into effect for California drivers and vehicle occupants. Now that I am older, I cannot understand why we don’t have seatbelt laws for school buses. I know here it would not have helped. I am thankful you memorialized this accident. For locals it was referred to as the Yuba City bus crash. The victims who passed in their teens should be in the mid-60s now. 💟🕊️

My girlfriend owns a 1997 Blue Bird Wander Lodge ten speed stick shift pusher 45 footer. The motorhome is based on whatever the 45 school bus model and in California, there could be any number of operating cab configurations with both foot controlled turn signals as well as the manual signal on the tree. I rode a Blue Bird 35 foot school bus with a CAT diesel motor block powering the bus in the back (flat front car body style) 1988 model . I later rode in a 1993 conventional model, probably a vision also a 35 footer but a wheelchair equipped model. I liked the way the pusher model accelerated better than the conventional (which had a Detroit Diesel 8V93 motor block rather than the. 3208 Caterpillar 8V87 motor block I also rode a Carpenter conventional with a Detroit 8V91 motor under the hood. Carpenter tends to have their hoods up too high creating blind spots especially on the right sides of their buses. That is where Blue Bird really excels here with their use of a more aerodynamic sloped hoods as you mentioned. You j as be the best vision out the front on a float front Blue Bird with a tear end motor block. Does your school district have any pusher models?
